Circa 1909, seven Florida Masons residing in the Bunnell area of St. John’s County (now the City of Bunnell, located in Flagler County) petitioned the Grand Lodge of Florida for authorization to start up a new Masonic Lodge.
On November 11, 1910 the Grand Master granted their petition, and issued a Dispensation to form Bunnell Lodge as the 200th Masonic Lodge in Florida. The Dispensation also directed that three of the petitioners, Daniel Martin Deen, Benjamin B. Bachelder, and William B. Cochran, be installed as the Worshipful Master, Senior Warden and Junior Warden, respectively.
The Lodge was officially set to work by Right Worshipful Charles E. Rowton, District Deputy Grand Master of the 10th Masonic District, by order of Most Worshipful Albert W. Gilchrist, Grand Master of Florida.
According to Lodge records, the original members of the Lodge, in addition to the officers named above, were Isaac I. Moody, Duncan Bohannan, John B. Johnston, George Miles Moody, James Frank Lambert, Frank L. Byrd, and Fred D. Barmington.
On January 17, 1912, Bunnell Lodge was formally chartered as a Masonic Lodge, with George Miles Moody as its first Worshipful Master. The Charter Members of Bunnell Lodge were Daniel Martin Deen, Benjamin B. Bachelder, and William B. Cochran, Isaac I. Moody, Duncan Bohannan, John B. Johnston, George Miles Moody, James Frank Lambert, Frank L. Byrd, Fred D. Barmington, Adolph Deen, William Henry Deen, Robert Williams Deen, E.P. Over the years, Bunnell Lodge has called four different buildings home. From 1910 through 1917, it was on the top floor of the building at the corner of Moody Boulevard and Railroad Street; from 1917 through 1924 the old bank building at the corner of Moody Boulevard and N. Bay Street; from 1924 through 1946 the Lodge returned to the building at the corner of Moody Blvd. and Railroad Street. Finally, in 1946, our own Lodge building was erected, and we have been there ever since.
There have been four Brothers of Bunnell Lodge who have served as District Deputy Grand Master: George Wickline (1954), Thomas Shelton Brooks Sr. (1962), Skippy Novick (1987), and William Tiger Moore (1995).
Today, Bunnell Lodge consists of approximately 140 Master Masons, and meets at 7:30 PM on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, except July and August. Our Lodge building is also the home of Sirius Sunshine Lodge 402 (F&AM of Florida), the Bunnell Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Flagler County Shrine Club, the Flagler County Square Club, and our newest friends, the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine. |
